Coronavirus in Pets

As we know, our dogs and cats can be infected with Coronavirus.

Corona virus Covid-19 that is spreading in humans; it is classified as a beta coronavirus (Betacoronaviruses), which is not the same as the Corona virus in dogs and cats; it is classified as alpha coronavirus. (Alphacoronaviruses)

Many people are probably wondering if the corona virus in dogs and cats that we used to know. Will it be the same infection? Will it have transmitted to human? Today we come to solve your concerns.


In healthcare, Coronaviruses have long been detected in animals. Animal coronaviruses are specific to each species. Canine coronavirus (CCV) is a specific strain of coronavirus in dogs and Feline coronavirus (FCoV) in cats.

Coronaviruses in dogs and cats are different species. Therefore, when infected, they will show different symptoms.

Symptoms in dogs:  will cause diseases in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract, there will be coughing, sneezing, runny nose, shortness of breath, and there may be other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, etc.

Symptoms in cats:  Symptoms in cats are more severe than dogs. The virus attacks your cat's respiratory and digestive systems. The initial symptoms are similar to a typical fever, frequent sneezing, watery eyes, runny nose, diarrhea, nausea, weight loss, and in some cats infected with the coronavirus. The virus may mutate into peritonitis (FIP), showing different symptoms depending on the level of immunity in each cat.


There are two types of symptoms known as

-Wet (wet or effusive form) with fluid in the ascites or chest cavity noticeable

-The dry (dry or non-effusive form) is particularly difficult. Because cats will not show specific symptoms. The symptoms will follow the lesion that appears.

Feline coronavirus is a virus that is transmitted between cats through contact with infected faces or licking.
